Some Info about Los Angles

It was 1781 when the small settlement of Los Angeles was established. Although there were only a few families living in the region at that time, the small settlement had a population of 315 people by 1800. In 1822, the construction of the Plaza Catholic Church was completed. The small community of Los Angeles continues to grow steadily. Forces from the Unites States captured Los Angeles in 1847.

In 1848, gold was discovered in California and American with dreams of striking it rich flocked to Los Angeles and the surrounding region. The population of Los Angeles had increased to 5,164 by 1870. However, Los Angeles suffered severe floods during the winter of 1861 and 1862 Los. Numerous Japanese people migrated to Southern California in general and Los Angeles in particular as did numerous Mexicans, during the early 1900's. In addition, there are also large numbers of African Americans arriving in Los Angeles by the time of WW I. In the meantime, a man named Abbot Kinney developed the community of Venice in 1904. However, as the result of the arid climate the growing community had a major problem supplying water to its people. Between 1908 and 1913, the Los Angeles aqueduct was constructed in order to provide water to the community. Cecil B. DeMille contracted for a hired a barn in the suburb known as Hollywood in order to make films in 1913. The film industry flourished during the following decades.
Los Angeles continued to boom in the early 1900's and the community had overtaken San Francisco in size by the early 1920's. Los Angeles had a population of 1.5 million by 1939. In 1923, Los Angeles became the home of the Biltmore Hotel. In addition, the Hollywood sign was first erected in 1923. In 1927, the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel was constructed. In 1928, the first City Hall was erected. In 1939, Union Station was constructed.

However, during the 1930's the Great Depression cause much suffering in Los Angeles much the same as the rest of America. From 1935 through 1939 many people from Oklahoma fled the dust bowl to the Los Angeles area. During WWII, Los Angeles was once again booming boomed, although the Japanese residents were interned. However, during the remainder of the 1900's, things didn't go quite as smoothly in Los Angeles. There was rioting known as the Zoot Suit riots in which Mexicans were attacked during the summer of 1943.

Riots again broke out in Los Angeles in 1965. The police stopped, questioned, and beat an African American in August of that same year. Some 34 people were subsequently killed during the ensuing riots. Also, an African American named Rodney King was beaten by four police officers and it was caught on video tape for the entire community to see in 1992. However, the four police officers were acquitted at their trial. During the resulting three days of riots, 58 people lost their lives.

An earthquake struck Los Angeles in 1994. On the Richter scale the earthquake measured 6.7, thousands of people were injured, 57 people were killed, and the cost of the damage was in the billions of dollars. In 1954, a man named Simon Rodia was responsible for the construction of Watts Towers. Then, in 1961, the Theme Building was constructed. The population of Hispanics in the Los Angeles area grew dramatically during the late 1900's. In the meantime, the percentage of white non-Hispanics decreased. These days, Los Angles has a population of 3.8 million people.
