Some Info about Phoenix

Phoenix, AZ, is the 14th largest metro region in the country and the sixth largest community in the nation. The capital if Arizona is Phoenix and it is also the largest metro region and community in Arizona. By population, Phoenix is the third largest capital city by area in the U.S. and, by population, the largest capital city in the country. .

Phoenix is located 20 minutes southwest of Scottsdale and 20 minutes west of Tempe in central Arizona. Over five Fortune 1000 company headquarters are located in Phoenix, including the well-known names that include PetSmart, Dodge, and Avnet. US Air ways is located in the close by community of Tempe. Charles Schwab, Prudential, American Express, Boeing, Honeywell, AlliedSignal, Motorola, and Intel are some of the other companies that have major operations in Phoenix.

In 1912, the last of the 48 contiguous states in the nation was admitted to the union, and Arizona, which is the Grand Canyon state, achieved statehood. In 1848, the land that was originally part of New Mexico, was ceded to the country, and in 1863, became a separate territory. In 1854, copper was discovered and until the 1950's copper mining became the premier industry in Arizona. The population of Arizona increased dramatically as the result of the widespread availability of air conditioning and refrigeration following WWII, which resulted in Phoenix becoming one of the fastest growing communities in the U.S. The population of Arizona has always been predominantly urban, especially in the middle of the 1900's and in terms of area is the sixth largest state in the nation. The population of Phoenix has always been predominantly urban, especially since the middle 1900's, when, at the expense of the countryside, suburban and urban regions started growing rapidly.

It is believed by some scholars that the name of Phoenix was translated from a Basque phrase that mean place of oaks, although some others attribute the name of the translation of a Papago Indian phrase that mean place of the little or young spring.

The community of Phoenix is located on the site of a prehistoric village that was built by the Hohokam tribe of Native Indians. Although about 1450 A. D, these Indians disappeared without a trace, had developed a flourishing culture. They are believed to be the ancestors of the Pima tribe. The translated Hohokam in Pima means those who have gone. The Hohokam Indians had built a sophisticated system of irrigation canals, several of which are still being used, and remain as evidence of their existence.

It wasn't until the late 1860's that there was a permanent resettlement of the Hohokam village. In the meantime, the region shared the history of the rest of Arizona. While being in search of the Seven Cities of Cibola, in the 1500's the Hispanic conquistadors invaded Arizona, and brought with them new agriculture techniques, horses, and cattle. They were followed by farmers, traders, and miners who were tolerated by the Native Indians until it became obvious that these white pioneers were encroaching on their land during the 1850's. Battles between the tribes and the pioneers resulted in intervention by the United States military and eventually the tribes were permanently placed on reservations.

Camp McDowell, which was a United States Army post, had a close by supply that arrived in 1864. The location was in the ruins of the Hohokam village. The irrigation canals for the village of the Hohokam Indians were being rebuilt by two pioneers and one of them named the location Phoenix in 1867. This pioneer predicted that a great community would rise from these ruins as much the same as the mythical phoenix bird rises from its own ashes. The year 1881 brought the incorporation of Phoenix. In 1887, with the building of the railroad system, Phoenix quickly developed into a major trading center and, in 1889, became the capital of the Arizona territory. In 1912, it was appointed the capital of Arizona.

As the result of the general outlaw environment, gambling palaces, and saloons, the community of Phoenix had a reputation of being rowdy frontier settlement. By the early 1900's, law and order were restored and Phoenix entered a new stage. The railroad established an immigration system that has worked continuously without interruption that brought pioneers from all over the nation. For example, the population of Phoenix increased to almost 790,000 people from 107, people during the 30 years after WW II.

During the first half of the 1900's, there were some major technological advances that included the advent of air conditioning, the Central Arizona Aqueduct System project, the Southern Pacific Railroad, and the Roosevelt Dam on the Salt River, and the Southern Pacific Railroad all of which that brought about industrial and agricultural development that resulted in incredible growth. Phoenix experienced its third major growth in population in 40 years during the 1990's. This was partially due to the large influx of people from California.
